What Is ADAS Recalibration and Why Does It Matter After a Windshield Replacement?
If your car has lane keeping or automatic emergency braking, its camera lives behind the windshield — and it needs recalibrating after replacement. Here's why skipping it is risky.
What ADAS actually is
ADAS — Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — is the umbrella term for the safety features that use sensors and cameras to help you drive. The ones tied to your windshield are the forward-facing camera mounted behind the rearview mirror: lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control all rely on it.
That camera looks through the windshield at the road ahead. It's calibrated to a specific piece of glass, at a specific angle, in a specific position. Change the glass, and the camera's view of the road shifts — sometimes only slightly, but enough to throw off the systems that depend on millimeter-level accuracy.
Why replacement throws it off
Even an identical windshield installed perfectly can sit a fraction of a degree differently from the original, and the glass itself can have minor variations in optical clarity. To the human eye it's invisible. To a camera measuring lane lines at 60 mph, it's enough to cause the system to misread the road — braking too late, too early, or not at all, or flagging lane departures that aren't happening.
That's why recalibration isn't a suggestion on equipped vehicles. It's the process of re-aiming the camera to the new windshield so the safety systems behave the way the manufacturer designed them to.
What recalibration involves
Recalibration means aiming the camera back to factory spec using the manufacturer's procedure. Depending on the vehicle, that's a static calibration (the car parked at a specific distance from a target board) or a dynamic calibration (driving the vehicle under defined conditions so the system relearns). Some vehicles need both.

Skip recalibration and the safety systems may still light up and appear to work, but they're working off a misaligned reference. Lane keeping might drift, automatic braking might react to phantom obstacles or react late to real ones. The risk isn't that the feature is gone — it's that it's quietly wrong.
On a vehicle with these systems, a windshield replacement without recalibration is an incomplete job. That's why we don't consider the replacement finished until the camera is re-aimed and verified.
