Repair or Replace? How to Tell What a Chipped Windshield Needs

If the damage is small, fresh, and not directly in your line of sight, a resin repair can usually save the windshield. If it's long, branching, or already touching an edge, replacement is the safer call. The line between the two comes down to three things: size, location, and whether the crack is still growing.

Most repairable chips are roughly the size of a quarter or smaller — under about 1.5 inches across. Bullseye chips, star breaks, and combination breaks in that range are good candidates for resin injection, which fills the void, stops the spread, and restores most of the structural clarity.

Once a crack runs longer than about the width of a dollar bill, it crosses out of repair territory. A long crack can't be injected cleanly enough to hold, and the structural integrity of the glass is already compromised. At that point, a full replacement is the only reliable fix.

Chips in the driver's direct line of sight are tricky. Even a perfectly injected repair can leave a faint distortion right where your eyes focus, and that distortion can be distracting or catch glare at night. For that reason, many shops — including us — will recommend replacement for chips dead-center in the driver's view.

Damage close to the edge of the windshield is also harder to repair. The glass is under stress near the edges, and a chip there is more likely to spread even after a repair. Edge cracks are one of the most common reasons a chip turns into a replacement.

A rock chip is not a stable object. Temperature swings, vibration, and even running your defroster on a cold Tacoma morning can push a small chip into a long crack. Once it starts spreading, the odds of a successful repair drop fast.

That's the single biggest reason to deal with a chip quickly. A chip you could have repaired for a fraction of the cost on Monday can become a full replacement by Friday — same damage, very different price. Resin repair isn't cosmetic — it's structural. We inject a clear acrylic resin into the chip under pressure, filling the air pockets that weaken the glass. Once cured with UV light, the repair bonds the broken layers back together so the chip can't keep spreading, and the visible mark fades to a faint point.

Replacement makes sense when the glass can't be safely restored: long cracks, edge damage, chips in the driver's line of sight, or damage that's already spread past the point of a clean repair.
