What Causes Windshield Chips on Tacoma and South Sound Roads
Most chips around here come from gravel trucks, highway debris, and cold-weather temperature shock. Here's what's actually cracking windshields on Tacoma roads.
The three main culprits
Almost every rock chip we see around Tacoma traces back to one of three things: debris kicked up by other vehicles, loose gravel from trucks and road work, or temperature stress cracking the glass. Understanding which one hit you helps you read whether a chip is likely to spread.
Highway debris and following distance
The most common chip source is a stone thrown up by the tires of a vehicle ahead of you — usually a truck or SUV with aggressive tread. The stone leaves the road surface, gets flung backward, and hits your windshield at highway speed. I-5, SR 16, and SR 167 are where we see the most of these.
Following distance is the single biggest factor you control. More distance means more time for a kicked-up stone to lose speed and drop before it reaches you. It's not a guarantee, but it's the difference between a near-miss and a chip far more often than people think.
Gravel trucks and uncovered loads
Trucks hauling gravel, sand, or demolition debris are a major chip source around Pierce County. Even legal loads shed dust and small stones at speed, and a single pebble from a truck bed at 60 mph will chip — or crack — a windshield. Construction zones and the roads feeding the Port of Tacoma are hotspots.
Washington requires loads to be secured and covered, but enforcement isn't constant. If you're behind a truck and you see dust or debris coming off it, back off or change lanes. The few seconds it costs you are cheaper than a windshield.
Temperature shock
Glass expands and contracts with temperature. A windshield that's been sitting in freezing air all night and then gets hit with a blast of hot defroster air can crack from the thermal stress alone — sometimes right through an existing chip you hadn't noticed.
The same goes for the reverse in summer: a blazing-hot windshield hit with cold water from a hose or an automated car wash can shock-crack. Warming the glass gradually with the defroster on low, and avoiding cold water on hot glass, prevents a lot of avoidable cracks.
- Leave more following distance on the highway
- Back off trucks with visible debris or dust
- Warm the windshield gradually — don't blast cold glass with hot air
- Don't run cold water over a hot windshield
- Deal with small chips before temperature swings spread them
Why a chip turns into a crack
A chip is a weak point. Once the outer layer of the laminated glass is broken, the inner layers are carrying more stress, and any flex in the body — a bump, a slam of the door, a temperature swing — can drive that weakness into a visible crack. That's why a chip you got on Monday can suddenly run across the glass on Wednesday.
Resin repair stops this. By filling the chip and bonding the broken layers, a repair removes the stress concentrator so the glass behaves like solid glass again. It's why we always say: a chip is a same-week problem, not a same-month one.
